I had the opportunity to hear Bobby Bragan speak when he was part of a panel of former major leaguers at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's entry into the major leagues. It was 1997 and the location was the Brooklyn campus of LIU. Not unexpectedly, several members of the panel (all others of whom shall remain nameless here) were asked about their well-publicized negative reactions to Jackie's arrival. Every other panel member, with the sole exception of Bobby Bragan, backtracked, made excuses, etc. Bobby stood up and sais something like, "Look. I did what I did at the time. I said what I said at the time. It was the result of my upbringing and life experience. I am not proud of it...and I am a much different person today." Very impressive, I think.
